Charles shares both sons with his former wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in 1997. His long-standing relationship with Camilla, which overlapped with his marriage to Diana, has often been cited as a source of tension. Diana herself once remarked in a BBC interview that “there were three of us in this marriage,” highlighting the situation.
Royal author Christopher Andersen has also suggested that, despite more than two decades since Charles and Camilla married, William merely tolerates his stepmother, while she is said to feel somewhat uneasy around him.
That said, another possibility is that Camilla may choose to step back from public duties after Charles’ death. Although the couple currently live at Clarence House, she could relocate permanently to Ray Mill House, her private home where she already spends much of her time away from official life.
A friend told The Telegraph that Ray Mill House offers her a rare sense of normalcy, a place where she can relax, spend time with loved ones, and escape the pressures of royal responsibilities. If circumstances change, that retreat may become even more important.
