As the horror gnawed on me, a deep voice cut through the air.
"What's going on here?"
His tone was icy, and his indifferent gaze could freeze even my soul as if he was looking at nothing more than a nuisance.
Vera ran to him, throwing on her innocent act. “She attacked me! I had no choice but to defend myself. You know how she gets…”
“She’s lying! I didn’t…” I tried to explain but he didn’t give me a chance.
“Clean up the mess,” Darius said emotionless and walked away.
He didn't even bother looking back, because all I am to him now was a mess. I felt so crushed that I stopped breathing.
Vera smirked and followed him like a shadow while I caved into the pain. Everything went black and when I woke up, I was in the clinic with the kind healer tending to me.
"Good heavens, you're awake." Clara was the only one in the pack showing me kindness. She clicked her tongue as she scolded me, “You need to stop getting into fights with that woman.”
“I didn’t start it,” I mumbled, my voice weak. “She’s angry because Darius has been coming to my room at night again.”
The healer sighed, shaking her head. “I don’t know what the Alpha’s thinking anymore. He seemed so happy when he brought you home. How could he treat his mate like this?”
I had no answer. I wonder the same thing every day. How could someone who once looked at me like I was his entire world now see me as nothing?
Suddenly, the room became silent, and I noticed Clara looking restless.
“What’s wrong?” I nervously asked.
Clara looked at me, her expression tightening. “Lyanna, I didn’t know how to tell you this, but you’ve lost the baby.”
My heart stopped. "What are you talking about?"
Clara looked confused. “You didn’t know? You were four weeks pregnant.”
I stared at her, numb. My heart felt like it was being ripped apart. I didn’t even know I was pregnant before I lost it.
How could I lose something I never knew I had?
“It wasn’t fair…”
Tears flooded from my eyes as I wailed in Clara’s arms. How could my life be this miserable?
I left the clinic before dusk. My body was a dull, throbbing ache beyond physical pain. My soul hurt in ways I couldn’t even put into words.
As I headed to the pack house with the weight of my life pressing down on me, I overheard voices from the garden.
“He’s finally going to crown me Luna!” Vera announced to her friends, who gasped in shock.
I froze.
Darius was going to make her his Luna?
